thought-provoking

"This is why political attempts to resolve the problem of social injustice are bound to fail: they all operate by trying to make the poor richer, instead of trying to help the rich to recognize their poverty" (Stephen Palmquist, "Basic Guidelines for Implementing Kingdom Politics")...

the danger of names

I was blessed tonight by reading Rose Marie Miller's book From Fear to Freedom, in which she shares how she learned to move beyond moralistic law-keeping to the liberty of her Father's love for her in Christ. After that, I went online to see if I could find out more about her husband Jack's life, since my father went to his church but didn't really keep up with what happened after he left New Life OPC to move to Quarryville in the early '80s. Of course, in doing so, I mainly stumbled upon critiques of Sonship, some of which may have truth to them, but which fail to see the real value in the Millers' work. It seems like because some have taken the truths of the Sonship teaching to extremes, others feel like it is necessary to condemn it wholesale....

html writing and web design help

In my (several) years of working with web pages, here are some of the most helpful links I've found for the budding Web designer/developer. Possibly a more advanced post will follow, with links on coding, server setup, hosting, content management systems, browser quirks, web analytics, and other such issues. Templates - http://perishablepress.com/press/2007/08/22/bare-bones-htmlxhtml-document-templates/ These give you something to start from when you are writing an HTML document. Training- http://www.w3schools.com/, http://www.htmlhelp.com W3Schools is a full tutorial on HTML, CSS, and other things Web designers need to know. HTMLHelp focuses more on reference, such as a description of all the tags valid in HTML4 (most of which are still valid in XHTML, which is what our site uses). Reference - http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/, http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS/ These are the official standards for XHTML & CSS, so they are definitive descriptions of how to use them correctly. They're hard to read, though. Cleanup - http://infohound.net/tidy/, http://jsbeautifier.org/, http://www.prettyprinter.de/ HTML...

the dangers of confusing facts with knowledge

(In response to How Social Media Has Changed Us, on Mashable) Knowledge is still power, even in the age of social media. Wikipedia and all the other online reference sites can only provide information. One does not possess true knowledge of a subject unless you can go beyond the mere acquisition of facts to the synthesis of original ideas. In our media-rich, distraction-filled online culture, it may be more difficult to come up with truly original ideas than it was 20 years ago. Knowledge must be cultivated - when all the facts are available at your fingertips 24/7, who has the time to gain a deep familiarity with a subject, such as one could get through extensive reading? In this context, I think a quote from Marshall McLuhan is appropriate: Instead of tending towards a vast Alexandrian library the world has become a computer, an electronic brain, exactly as an...
